Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology

Oral Medicine and Radiology is a unique speciality encompassing two branches of dentistry. Oral medicine is that area of special competence concerned with the health of the oral and para-oral structures. In particular, it deals with the diagnosis and management of oral precancer and cancer as well as management of oral conditions in patients with medically compromised conditions and behavioural disorders. Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology is concerned with imaging and interpretation of maxillofacial pathologies and the department is keeping pace with this ever evolving branch of dentistry.

Faculty

The department comprises of four dedicated faculty.

Dr Asha R Iyengar , Professor and Principal is the longest serving and most experienced faculty of the department with over 28 years of experience in the field.  She has held  key positions in various organisations of the speciality at the national and international level. Her areas of interest includes role of ultrasonography in head and neck region and salivary biomarkers.

Dr Seema Patil, Professor, has 14 years of experience in the field and currently heads the department. She has undergone training in Radiology at Showa University, Japan.  She is keen on pursuing research on the role of molecular biomarkers in precancer and evaluation of anatomical variations on CBCT.

The Department is always involved in various clinical research projects at a national level providing the students the right exposure and active participation.

The infrastructure of the Department is well developed with well equipped consultation areas, patient lounge, instruments, sterilization room, recovery room, minor operation theatre, archiving facilities and computer and telecommunication facilities. State of the art equipments including the LASER are available for both patient therapy and student training. A separate section for implantology; which also is a certificate course is being implemented successfully through the years.

The Department always strives for perfection yet believes in perseverance and improvement- continuance in a state of grace leading finally to a state of glory.

Prosthodontics deals with the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes.

Teaching Programmes include BDS, MDS, Certificate course in Aesthetic Dentistry, Certificate course in implants Dentistry, PG Certificate course in Oral Implantology (IGNOU). The department offers 05  specialty clinic services and are Complete Denture Prosthodontics, Removable Partial Denture Prosthodontics, Fixed Partial Denture Prosthodontics, Implantology, Maxillofacial Prosthodontics.

The total space provided for the dept is 9969 sq.ft and is allocated for the following areas – Professor room, Staff room, UG Clinic & Lab, PG Clinic & lab, Wax –up lab, Phantom head lab &  Pre-clinical Lab. The department has separate Clinical areas for UG & PG students and a modern fully equipped Pre- Clinical Laboratory &  Ceramo-metal Laboratory. Some special equipment  available in the department are Alginate mixer, Semiadjustable & Fully adjustable articulators, Phantom heads @ Manikins for preclinical training,  Autoclave, Casting Machines, Ceramic furnace, Dental Lathes, Pre-heating furnaces, Sand Blaster, Lab Micromotors, Duplicating unit, Electropolishing units, Model Trimmers, Polymerization unit, vibrators, Vacuum Mixers,  Flexible Resin Pressing Unit, Ultrasonic cleaners & Scaler.

The curriculum is designed such that students go through simulation and bench courses to learn the fundamental skills, and then evolve to more complex cases in the Prosthodontic clinics. Courses are evaluated and updated annually for contents and are augmented with technology to teach the latest techniques in Prosthodontics with comprehensive treatment planning in all aspects of prosthodontic care including Implant Dentistry, Occlusion and Aesthetics. The department is involved in a lot of research activity in collaboration with other scientific centers. We endeavor to constantly improve our teaching techniques/methods. Dental Students are taught the value of life-long learning. We strive to let our patients have a unique, holistic, professional experience when they visit our clinics. We are also committed to providing the highest standard of dental care available and fostering long-term relationships with our patients. Our aim is to inspire confidence and trust that comes with an aesthetically and functionally restored, healthy smile.

ORAL & MAXILLOFACIAL PATHOLOGY AND ORAL MICROBIOLOGY

 

Oral pathology is a specialty of dentistry and discipline of pathology that deals with the nature, identification, and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions (the mouth and jaw areas). The practice of oral pathology includes research and diagnosis of diseases using clinical, radiographic, microscopic, biochemical, or other examinations.

An oral and maxillofacial pathologist specialises in the identification of diseases of the head and neck region using various histopathological and laboratory investigations.

Since its inception in the year 1992, the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology has endeavoured in imparting knowledge to under graduates in the subjects of:

  • Oral Anatomy, Histology, Physiology and Embryology  ( IBDS )
  • Oral Pathology and Microbiology (II and III BDS )

 

Post graduate Teaching programme:

The postgraduate course (Master of Dental Surgery) was started in the department in the year 2012 with admission of three seats per year.

 

PhD course:

In 2018, the department received the recognition of the PhD course under the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.

 

Biopsy , cytology  and clinical pathology services :

We provide several services which include the microscopic interpretation and diagnosis of biopsy tissues and cytology samples from lesions in the oral and paraoral areas using routine and special stains.  These services are available to both patients who visit our hospital as well as to private practitioners who can send the samples to us. Routine blood, serum and urine investigations are done of patients undergoing dental treatment at our hospital.

 

Research:

The faculty of the department are actively involved in research and some of the services we provide are:

  • Aid in postgraduate dissertation work & research by providing the use of Stereomicroscope & Research microscope (the research microscope encompasses different applications including bright field, dark field, phase contrast, polarizing & fluorescent microscopy).
  • Facilitate undergraduate research projects.
  • Capturing photomicrographs of histopathological slides for use in case presentations / paper presentations / poster presentations/ dissertation work.
  • Use of image analysis software for the analysis of photomicrographs and other images.
  • Immunohistochemical analysis.

 

 

The department is equipped with a state of the art histopathology /cytopathology laboratory which includes embedding centre, cold plate, soft tissue microtome, hot air oven, ph meter, autoclave, digital balance, stereomicroscope, trinocular microscope with CCTV and camera attachment , antigen retrieval microwave and a pentahead research microscope being the cynosure of the department.

The department  faculty who are involved in teaching, guiding and mentoring the students use a multitude of comprehensive teaching aids, such as PowerPoint presentations, smart boards, models, charts, videos ,microscopic slides and a microscope attached to a CCTV. An excellent ,self sufficient and well maintained library consisting of textbooks and atlases, as well as informative CDs is also present .

The dedication of the faculty has yielded with students getting multiple distinctions, ranks and gold medals in both the undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

The primary goal of this department encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of sequelae of dental caries and the other defects of natural teeth; techniques and procedures to restore the teeth to full function and appearance in an aesthetically pleasing manner with as little loss of the healthy tooth structure as possible. The  department specialises in the restoration of diseased teeth with the help of the latest restorative materials and Endodontics.

The department constantly updates itself with equipments and materials to render latest treatment effectively in a short time.

The department treats an average of 25,000 to 30,000 patients annually and has state-of-the-art technology, dedicated staff and infrastructure to render good services to patients.

The specialty being a confluence of basic sciences and clinical dentistry, it shoulders the responsibility of academic care from BDS , MDS , Certificate course and Phd course. The department also has a full fledged, pre clinical laboratory equipped with the latest technology and phantom heads, where preclinical students can have a “feel” of treatment procedures before they are carried out in patients.

The department has its own library to help the students update their knowledge apart from the college central library.
The faculty members show utmost concern and care in sharing their knowledge and experience with the students. They strive constantly for academic progress by the way of conferences, CDE program, seminars and workshop and try to translate these activities into research. The department is very proud to be one of the few in the country to offer wide range of academic streams from certificate course to doctoral studies.

The department offers both undergraduate and postgraduate training in Periodontics.

We provide Oral health education, dental disease preventive care and simple treatment procedures which are possible at the camp site. The Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry was established in 1993 with an undergraduate program and currectly trains 60 students every year. The Postgraduate program in the specialty was started in 2003 and presently has an intake of 3 students per year.The Department was also recognized as a PhD centre in 2018The department provides comprehensive treatment for children from birth to adolescence (0-14 years) including those with Special Health Care Needs. Treatment under general anesthesia for children requiring extensive treatment is provided by the department at Sevakshetra Hospital which is attached to the college.

The department conducts School Oral Health programs on a public-private-partnership model which has been recognized by the World Health Organization. This caters to needy school children in both urban and rural settings and provides free dental check up and treatment to approximately 15,000 children every year. On site treatment is provided with the help of a Mobile Dental Van with two chairs as well as portable dental units that help us to simultaneously treat several children. This has led us also to several innovative practices including a powerless pump for scalers. The program provides both undergraduate and postgraduate students a vital connect with the society, its needs and trains them in liasoning and executing such community based dental camps.

The department has industrial ties including Vittal Mallya Research Foundation and Hindustan Unilever Limited for various research projects. This is critical for the ongoing research training of our postgraduate and doctoral students.

The Department was recognized as a Best Department of Pedodontics at the 8th International Dental Students & 2 Dental Surgeons Congress in 2016.

 

Department of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics  is  well equipped with state of the  art infrastructure, which  offers Post graduate, PG Diploma and PhD  programs. We believe in 4D principles which stand for discipline, direction, dedication and determination. The faculty members are highly qualified and experienced.

They are trained from various schools of thoughts of Orthodontics, thereby inculcating the best of all this in teaching and training programs of our department. The staffs of the department have travelled widely and have won laurels at various International and National forums for their clinical and research presentations. The department has always strived to teach beyond syllabus, keeping in trend with the current research.

A lot of projects on genetics have been carried out. The department has to its credit more than 50 International and National publications. The department has organized contemporary CDE programs which are well attended and appreciated. The students are trained right from basic to contemporary orthodontic approaches including Lingual & Other Invisible orthodontics. The department has an active alumni association.
