    Department of Human Anatomy

    Introduction :

Human Anatomy is a basic Medical Sciences subject taught usually in the first year of all Health sciences Schools irrespective of the faculty types. The subject deals with the structural organization of all the Human body parts.

Department of Human Anatomy was founded in the year 1992 along with the inception of the DAPM Memorial RV Dental College, Bangalore.

Mainly Anatomy of the Head and Neck is taught in detail to the students of 1BDS class in a Dental College.

Further there are different sections under which the whole of Human Anatomy is studied.

Micro Anatomy is study of Cells and Tissues named as Histology using different types of Microscopes.

Macro Anatomy is Naked eye study of various structures and Organs. It is studied under section Heads of General Anatomy, Embryology, Osteology and Gross Anatomy.

Class room is equipped with smart board which enables optimal use of Multimedia during Theory classes. Anatomy as a subject requires highly illustrative method of teaching to understand hence an extensive use of multimedia with the smart board is a must in every Anatomy Lecture class. The department is WiFi enabled and provided with a laptop and printer copier scanner. In addition to this the faculty members have their own personal laptop. These facilities are used to explore and store the educational resource search and store the same to be utilized during the classes. They are also used for maintaining the records of students attendance and their continuous performance assessments along with administrative documents of the department.

Practical halls of the Department are well equipped with the state of the Art Infra structure.

The Department has ample sets of Micro slides in Histological sections and required number of Microscopes which are well maintained and are of good quality and the same is made available for every student during the practical class.

Processed skeleton and individual Bone sets are available in the Department for demonstration during Osteology classes.

Hand crafted Embryology models are available for demonstrating developmental processes and mile stones.

Dissected specimens of regional dissections and individually dissected specimens are available for prosections and studying Gross Anatomy. These specimens are stored and maitntained in containers with fine grade formalin.

A well updated Departmental Library is available for use of the students and the Teaching staff during the Practical sessions.

At the beginning of an academic year Teaching Anatomy begins with lessons in General Anatomy as it forms the first part of the prescribed Syllabus and also the basis of introduction to all the systems.

Histology initially taught in the Theory class and the same is demonstrated in the practical class with the help of multimedia and microscopic slides. Later the students study the micro slides with the help of Binocular microscopes. They learn to identify the tissues, draw the diagrams in the Histology Manual. This is followed by a detailed discussion and presentation of every slide with extensive interactions among the students and the staff.

General embryology and systemic Embryology is taught as Theory at first and same is demonstrated in Practical classes using Embryology models.

As this is a Dental School Osteology of Skull bones, facial skeleton, jawbone and Vertebrae of the neck is taught in the Theory class and later demonstrated in the Practical classes using the Bone sets.

Gross Anatomy is also taught in the Theory class using smart board and a fine video demonstration of the Human dissection and the same is demonstrated to the students by pro sections in the Practical classes.

Whole of theoretical Anatomy learnt in the Lecture hall is demonstrated in the practical hall, discussed in groups, written and presented by students, finally revised. Topic test and viva are conducted for every topic. 100% of the prescribed Syllabus is not only covered but the students are taught beyond the syllabus too. Before they take up the university exams they take up three internal assessments and their knowledge of Anatomy is substantial and well learnt to clinically apply when they attempt the final examination and pass out of the 1st year BDS.

The Department is highly disciplined and encourages students to be regular to the classes. Prescribed Attendance is a must prerequisite to attempt the university examination. Every student is equally encouraged and counseled for their academic and social well being. Their personal and medical problems will be addressed to individually in the Department.

    Department of Physiology

    Introduction

Physiology is a field of science that describes the “Vital” functions of the living organisms and molecules. It forms the foundation to study medicine and the exchange of information between physiology and medicine is a two way street. Medicine borrows its physiochemical principles from physiology. In order to understand medicine physiology forms the reference state. It is important to know the functioning of the healthy person to explore which component may be malfunctioning in a patient.

Medical physiology takes a global view of human body. It deals with the functioning of the human body, which is interdependent. The interdependence begins from the functioning of the individual organ which, in turn depends on how the cell functions that further depends on the interactions among the subcellular organelles and countless molecules. Thus physiology requires an integrated understanding of events at the level of molecule, cell and organ.
